JULY – 2021. We would like to share some information and thoughts on the subject of “holidays on the Moselle” with you.
We would like to thank everyone who inquired about us during and after the storm disaster on the Ahr.
As many know, we also had floods on the Moselle. This time the water was higher than we are used to. The banks of the Moselle with the campsite and the Moselle Wine Route were flooded. The cellars in the town center were full and access to Pommern via the Moselle Wine Route was not possible. The water was higher than usual in recent years, but not nearly as high as during the flood of the century in 1993.
Luckily, the Mosel Chalets are built on a hillside to avoid flooding. Like most places directly on the Moselle, Pommern and its inhabitants are generally “flood-tested” to a normal extent.
Holidays on the Moselle were limited to three days
In Pommern, as well as in the entire region, “everyday life” has returned after just a few days. The streets are cleared, towns, restaurants, retail and all sights are looking forward to your visit. And not only that – they also make a living from it. Here or here you will find leisure tips for a visit to the beautiful Moselle. You can visit castles, such as Eltz Castle , without any restrictions, overcome your fear of heights on the Geierlay suspension bridge , visit the temple complex on the Martberg or explore picturesque places and hiking routes.
However, this time the subject of “Mosel flooding” was the focus of attention due to the terrible events and pictures of the storm disaster in the Ahr Valley, which is not too far away. It’s a tragedy. We feel for the people who had to leave their homes or even their lives in the floods. Standing with nothing in their hands in front of the rubble and mud where the day before yesterday was their home.
We cannot and do not want to get used to such storm catastrophes, just as we do not want to get used to pandemics. Unfortunately, they are currently the sad reality. Yes, it is difficult to think about vacation when 80 km away on a neighboring river, people are losing everything, or when pandemics are hitting us worldwide, terrible attacks are hitting us, or we are vacationing in less privileged countries, where luxury and misery are sometimes only a stone’s throw apart are. Traveling consciously is probably the best decision here and in the end it even helps the region that may be affected.
We are looking forward to our guests
In what way and to what extent we help in such cases, everyone can decide and take responsibility for themselves. Fortunately, most of our guests have not canceled their holiday on the Moselle and have booked for the coming autumn. Of course, there were also one or two comments on our posts from social media trolls, who use the suffering of others to agitate, scold, and point fingers. We can very well put them in their place or hold up a mirror to them.
We encourage everyone who also makes a living from tourism to continue to put their heart and soul into promoting their businesses and regions. We would like to say to travelers – please inquire beforehand how it really is on site, because the Moselle, on the other hand, only experienced flooding for 2 days according to the reports and after three days, thank God, everything was over without major damage.
As we read these lines, we think of all those who weren’t so lucky.
