It’s easy to see the great connection between the two and the ancient temple complexes, isn’t it?
Gaby and Andi from our family team, hosts of the Moselle Chalets AND the Martberg Archeology Park – now VIPs on the Moselle
The impressive history of the Martberg goes back to around 100 BC. The residents and members of the Pommern Martberg eV association are rightly proud of this sanctuary and its treasures.
Between the towns of Pommern and Karden, approx. 180 m high above the Moselle, lies the Martberg, which is very well-known among those who are interested. In ancient times there was a religious and political center here for many centuries. So Pommern has always been something special.
The Celtic tribe of the Treveri built on the Martberg around 100 BC. a large fortified settlement, a so-called oppidum . In Roman times, a Gallo-Roman temple district of national importance developed, which reached its heyday in the 3rd century AD. Large parts of this temple complex were rebuilt on the ancient foundation walls and, together with other reconstructions, convey a lively impression of the life and beliefs of the Celts and Romans.
Sehenswertes an der Mosel – sogar mit VIP Service
Incidentally, Gaby and Andi renewed their vows in a Roman ceremony on the Martberg – they love the Martberg. That is why they offer private tours exclusively for guests of the Mosel Chalets (during the pandemic, of course, in compliance with the rules of distance and hygiene). The small proceeds benefit the Martberg association.
Erste Führungen
The first tour was super spontaneous and unexpected, because after our guests had hiked up the Martberg, there was a heavy thunderstorm. Gaby and Andi spontaneously went to the Martberg, unlocked the temple complex and made a small excursion into the past with the guests. With dry feet and happy about the spontaneous tour, they drove back to the Mosel Chalets together. Shortly afterwards there was already the second guided tour for a honeymoon couple – how fitting 😉
Incidentally, the temple complexes can be reached from our beautiful holiday homes in 45-60 minutes on foot via the Lenus-Mars-Wanderweg, which is part of the Moselsteig Trail. The Moselsteig is one of Germany’s most beautiful hiking trails .
1000 thanks to Gaby and Andi! Nothing would work without you!
